I'm not jumping upon the decision to go for a sound
card, unless the group has made up its mind. The idea
is not to replace the existing design but to come out
with another version. All along we have been
discussing pros and cons only. I wish to add that
an ADC0808 based card is no match to a sound card
(I,too, was initiated into DAQ through this chip). A
0808 offers 8 bit resolution as compared to about
18bits of sound card, apart from several other
disadvantages . Moreover, as stated by National
Instruments, same ADC chip put on two different PCB
designs offer different performance (Noise wise). So
there is definite advantage in going for a proven
hardware.
As regards driver for sound card, I think IF we can
exploit the driver that comes along with the card,
things would become much easier.

As suggested by Rob Sacks its worth comparing
performance and costs of two systems. But lets not
forget that two of these are not competitors. As long
as the each has reasonable cost, they should be
acceptable. Let me emphatically say that the user is
going to PAY FOR THE HARDWARE ALONE. The software is
the intellectual property of the group and is being
offered free of cost. A sound card based system has
more of software than hardware. May be we can
visualize one as a multichannel dedicated hardware
system and another as a two channel system.
Off I go for two days now.
Bye,
Praveen
