With 19 or so channels of EEG you can do a complete "brain map" of
electrical activity on the cortex. This is very useful information
for planning neurotherapy treatment, identifying nonfunctioning areas
of the cortex, etc. At this point it's more of a clinical diagnostic
tool than anything else, but one that is used far less than it
probably should be, simply because they are too expensive for the
little clinics, and the hospitals use other approaches such as MRI.

Also there's some new software, the so-called LORETA system, that
will permit one to infer things about deep brain structures from 19-
point readings. People are now beginning to investigate the
possibility of training deep brain structures via biofeedback. For
example, if one could train structures such as the thalamus and
amygdala, it might provide a more direct approach to treating Post-
Traumatic Stress Disorder.
