Re: [buildcheapeeg] POLL's

Hi Waldemar,

Here's my second reply. This time, practical
issues.

The real problem with the poll is that it asks
the wrong questions.

There is no need to ask about the type of port,
because our current hardware uses the serial port,
so of course the program needs to support
the serial port. If anybody designs hardware in
the future that uses a different kind of port, it will
be extremely easy to add support for that to the
program, so there's no need to worry about this
now.

The question about which operating system
also answers itself. But here we have a fork
in the road. There are two answers, depending
on a separate question which does not appear
on the poll (and cannot).

That other question is, do we write source code
for a single operating system, or do we write
portable code for multiple operating systems?

If we write for a single operating system, then
obviously we would write for Win32 (i.e.,
Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP). I think everybody
would agree on this because Windows is much
more widely used than the other systems put together.

But if we choose to write portable source code
for multiple operating systems, then we will be
writing for several operating systems simultaneously,
and we won't need to choose an operating system.

The real question, then, is whether to write for
a single operating system, or whether to use
a library that enables us to write portable code
for multiple operating systems.

This is a technical question that can only
be evaluated by programmers.

In the past, several people including Moritz and
Joel Eriksson have advocated portable code. Joel
suggested the use of a portable GUI library
like SDL.

In the table you posted last night on the other list,
you said the initial program will be for Windows
alone, so I guess this decision has already been
made. I agree with the decision, so I'm not
complaining, but may I ask -- was it put to a vote? :)

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob-

Hi Rob

I had not look your message about the polls ;
- ( It was not a provocation, for sure )

I agree in some measure , but I am thinking in how get educated opinion -
it sounds so weird - and that causes me some troubles in relation to freedom ;

I guess Poll is a less intelligent choice , but that's the more fair for freedom of all,
( just like democracy - that's not good to guide by public opinion , but it seems to
be which causes less damages )

Waldemar
