again, jim made a good point that this thing will probably
be used on all sorts of platforms including embedded.
i myself am interested in porting it to handhelds which have limited
CPU power, no FPU's and small memory. a core library written in C or C++
will be useful for most platforms.

using high level stuff like matlab is slow and big, and also requires the
users to install multitudes of dependent s/w packages.

useability is as important as ease of development. imagine asking someone
to install perl/matlab or whatever as a prerequisite for
running the software...that would be a nightmare for non-computer experts.

each of us has limited time out of our busy schedules to work on this.
most likely whoever is working on a GUI will write it w/ whatever he/she is
comfortable with. most likely we will end up w/ multiple GUI
implementations as we have seen w/ other group efforts, such as the Jabber
instant messenger.

if there is indeed a good graphics library which can run on all sorts of
platforms, we should consider it. but i personally am not interested in RAD
tools, which generally result in clunky bloated slow GUI's that nobody
likes.
