Opto-Isolation

Talking backchannel with Andreas, he suggested I
mention my equipment. I have a Thought Technology
ProComp+, and the way it does isolation is via fibre
optic cable. I believe it's only one-directional,
as the ProComp encoder has dip-switches inside for
speed and protocol (but I could be wrong about that).
The encoder runs off four 1.5 volt batteries. The
PC side of the fibre cable runs off the RS232 RTS/CTS
pins. The LED that drives it seems to be very "red"
rather than "infra-red".

Although when I first got interested in homebuilding
a NF unit, I was thinking irDA, I've actually come
to like the ProComp's "physical connection" via a
non-metallic "wire".
