I am new to this group and don't know what the overall plan is. I just jumped in to help in the area that I know something about. For me, I have thesoldering skill to do either. Most people would need the through hole design if this was sold as a kit.
The through hole would be easier to trouble shoot and patch during initial testing.
I would suggest that the prototype be through hole and make the next decision after everything works.
One of the "next" decisions would be whether to make it as small as possible, or expandable for different functions like EKG and EMG. But one thing at a time!
