I don't understand what safety issues you could have with an optical coupler
because no electricity is actually transferred. Also correct me if I am
wrong, but aren't you guys planning on using something like an isolation
transformer? That would prevent any DC surges from getting through, but very
sharp voltage spikes could generate voltage pulses that would get carried to
the other side by the magnetic flux.
