No need for that. We just use the MCPxxx Chips by Arizona Microchip which
take care
of all the protocol problems and can be connected to a microcontroller in 5
minutes.
Basically it converts a normal RS232 connection into an IrDA link.
Before the advent of this new chip, it was indeed really complicated to get
IrDA connection using the complicated protocols. But with this chip it's
straight forward.
There's also an article about it in the newest Circuit Cellar edition.
