About 10 years ago, I actually experimented using the idea that you present.
Although it makes sense from a theoretical standpoint, it is difficult to
implement in practice. The resultant "pin cushion" is very uncomfortable
as the pins tend to dig in. Maintaining the correct pressure is a
challenge. Each pin would have to have it's own spring load. Sleeping or
just putting your head on a pillow with this is not possible.
The conductive paste solves the problem. You might not consider this an
elegant solution, but it works.
ALSO, at this point in the project, why create more problems and challenges.
Go with what works.
It seems to me that with your skill, what you could contribute here is
software.
