It wouldn't be the end -- people would find other places to host the
projects. After all, everybody had hosting for their projects before
VA Linux created SourceForge, even if it wasn't quite so web-oriented.
SF as a central resource has just publicised the whole idea a lot more
and got a lot of attention.

I found the original articles, but there is a lot of nastiness around
the whole issue. I'm guessing that there are some severe financial
pressures within VA Linux, and the bad feeling is seeping out into
their actions with the community. Maybe they can't really afford to
be this generous. If you really do want to read all this, do a Google
search for "SourceForge drifting". I don't really know what to
believe with so much nastiness around the subject.
