This is false. The reason that I haven't written
more code since abandoning ElectricGuru about
a year ago is that I lost interest at that time in
using neurofeedback on myself.

Unfortunately, Jim, software development doesn't
work that way. A program is like a house with a
poured concrete foundation. Once you've poured
the foundation, you are extremely constrained as to
what kind of house you can build in the future. This
is why planning is such an important part of writing
a program.

You seem to think that programs are infinitely
malleable. They are not. Quite the opposite.

Regards,

Rob

Dear John:

We seem to be at the opposite sides of the process.

Yours is: "Let us plan carefully and only write the code once."

Mine is: "Let us lash up some kludge to see how it works and then see howit can be improved."

Your question of how long I planned before writing code would be hard to answer, because the process "evolved" as we got more and more of it working. I started with a HAL-4 and I found out what was wrong and what had to beimproved. So it was not so much of design as redesign and fixing problems. If I had not gone through the HAL-4 learning step, I would not have known "what" to design. I could not have sat down and designed the system. Somuch of what I tried did not work. There are theories and then the real world comes along and teaches you. You may have heard my comments about what works and what is wishful thinking.

In order for "your" process to work, someone has to "know" what the code is supposed to do. Rob Sack waited for a year and never received the information he would need to write the code. I think Doug Sutherland is the most knowledgeable on this list and has searched the net for the information and so far as I know he has not been able to define what the code has to do.I have read your beautiful outlines for the code development just waitingfor someone to fill in the blanks.

I hope you understand that I am not criticizing your efforts here, I am just not sure that the information you need is actually available. After you write some code everybody will jump in with their 2 cents worth and criticize. But look how much further ahead that would put you. Then you can write the next piece of code and on and on. Since writing the code is so easy why not start with something.

I know I shouldn't get into this BUT I just can't help it. :-)

How long did you and your programmer plan "slink12r" before writing any
code??

Wait for it. :-)

Again I ask how long did you plan your program and how long did the
programmer plan before any code was written.
We've discussed quite a few concepts with regard to a multifunctional,
expandable piece of open source software.
Now we (or I can't speak for anyone else) have a design in mind so all that
is needed know is the formats to use.
IE
How do I talk to an EEG unit ??
Do I save the information in a format that no one else can use OR do I
choose a well defined one that can be used anywhere?

Jim as an engineer you should see the benefit in good design.
I'm originally a technician by trade (Telecommunications) and in that role
always planned before Jumping straight in! :-)

BTW love your site I'm glad there are people out there like you (and the
rest of this group) willing to share their knowledge and help others!
