After writing the above, I downloaded CA's personal (free) version of
InoculateIT and ran it on my entire hard disk. It turns out that
every one of my MS Word .doc files was infected with something called
a Word 97 Macro Class Q virus. InoculateIT claims to have fixed all
these files, and I tested the fix by loading a previously infected
copy of the Cheap EEG file into my laptop's MS Word program. The
laptop has McAfee on it. I don't know exactly how I got this virus,
but both McAfee and InoculateIT seem to fix it. If anyone copied any
Word files from me recently (such as the Why Cheap EEG or the one on
desired Software characteristics, I think you would do well to run a
virus check on your hard disk. I'm trying to think of everyone I
might have sent Word files to recently from this machine so I can
tell them about the problem.
_Really_ sorry, folks. I failed to keep a good watch for viruses. I
hope you all are smarter than me and protected yourself from my
stupidity. And thanks to Grant for finding it.
