RS232 can also traverse quite long distances.

Of course it can be done. The problem is that it requires much more CPU power
then the current design. And more "software technology".
I think it would be interesting if many channels could be modulated on a single
audiosignal. But I think this would require quite expensive electronic parts
(precision sinus generator VCOīs).

Again, I donīt think we win much by designing for soundcards. The whole problems
of opto-isolation and power supply of the different parts of the circuit will
be the same as they are right now. Linear opto-isolation needs parts and that
will result in about the same overall-costs.
