A reason for preferring the serial port over the parallel port, if
bandwidth is sufficient, is that one would like to reserve the
parallel port for a printer, to be used for printing training session
reports, graphs, etc. (generated, one hopes, by the wonderful,
sophisticated software the SW people are creating for us). Of course
one could use the USB or serial port for the printer, but some of the
same objections of Windows specificity, some machines without USB,
etc. arise, and serial printers are also relatively rare. So please
don't take the parallel port from us if you can avoid it.
