Dear Jim,
Yes i understand.
It would be unwise for one to try and recover from illness.
The potential risk from using biofeedback depends on the
the person him/her self.
It would be logic however, to first DIAGNOSE your brain (by an
proff. practionar, en then KNOW what your are training.
So it is important to be able to read EEG.
In this case sofware would make it possible for the therapist
to adjust the software-program (neurogame) for the client.
In that case one could have a machine at home.
Therapist must have grounding training in BFB/NFB.
I am educated in electrical/electronics/ software engineering,
and computertechnology.
I am focussing on wrtting programs for concentration (ADD/ADHD etc) so i know what to look for. (low beta/smr)
Peak performance is nice, but one must first find out if there
are other problems (social, pschol.) thus before training smr
or so, a diagnosis would be good.
Alpha/theta machines are risk-full for people suffering from
some illness.
People who would like to become professional in BFB/NFB
must have the possiblity to access education. Not by first
returning to university. (at least not 4 or 5 years).
Perhaps a special program. In europe for example whe also
have the so called Open University. One can follow courses
(modules) and or only some courses (put together), or one
can become psychologist. Its possible therefore to only study
courses so as to get access to BFB education.
But yes, i agree, to get the most out of biofeedback one must
have an excellent training in BFB.
Also it would be good to use BFB under guidance of a prof.
Thanks for your mail,
regards. Frans

Frans--
As I read Dr. Strohmeyer's message, the original proposed law (which
would affect New York State only) included a provision that would
have restricted the use of biofeedback for clinical/medical purposes
to psychologists, but this provision was removed, so other qualified
people would also be able to practice biofeedback.
I think it is important to distinguish between clinical and non-
clinical (for example, educational) uses of biofedback. Some kinds
of biofeedback, including some kinds of EEG biofeedback, really do
require the involvement of people who have an advanced understanding
of the brain and of psychological and behavioral issues. It is
appropriate that this kind of treatment be done under the supervision
of licensed and/or certified professionals. On the other hand, there
are other kinds of EEG training, such as peak performance training
and some kinds of attention training, where one is not trying to
treat a diagnosed disorder, that should be available to the general
interested public.
Actually, my personal preference would be for a system in which
prospective users of EEG biofeedback are informed and warned about
the potential risks and benefits, are advised to seek professional
consultation where appropriate, and ten left to do what they will at
their own risk.
