For a good standalone unit, it might be best to use a DSP
microprocessor. Then you could get away with less general
functionality and really focus on the specific functionality you
need. However, I'm sure it will be cheaper to connect to a PC than to
try to do all the processing with a standalone unit (unless you
happen to have a DSP board lying around <grin>).
