Your approach sounds good.
I also thought a lot about power supply. What if you don't need the full 5
volt but settle for
4.096 V ? Then you could go like this:
- connect 4*1.2 NiMH cells to get 4.8 V
- use LDO to regulate down to 4.096 (or even 4.5V)
- use capacitor switcher 7660 (or so) to invert, get -4.8 V
- also regulate to -4.096
Hmm...still quite complicated :)
But it safes one DC/DC converter or so. Maybe the easiest would
be to use more cells. Maybe the cost for additional cells is the same
and battery life goes up.
