Regarding this compile error ...

/usr/i386-slackware-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lXv: No such file or
directory

Seems that slackware 7.1 doesn't come with libXv.

Seems that libXv is also not in the XFree86 ftp site for X version 3.3.6
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.6/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc21/FILES

But libXv IS in XFree86 version 4.0 for glibc2.1 ...
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.0/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc21/FILES

Does this mean I need to upgrade to XFree86 v4.x?
What is in libXv that is used by BWView?

Earlier I did move to slack8 with X 4.1, but I didn't like some of
the new bugs er features so I went back to slack7.1 with X 3.3.6.
