Yes. Actually, the sound card itself does not need an optical input,
only digital. Since we're into building electronics, it is easy to
add an optical receiver (TORX173).

No actually I don't. :-) I just wanted to play it safe. However, I've
sent a support request to Creative Labs, asking some (probably quite
unusual) questions. Since a Soundblaster Live board is $70 or so, and
a lot of people owns one (including me), it is a far better option
than a $100-$200 professional board.
The webpage said they reply within two days, but I guess this one
will take longer. :-)
