Hi Jim,
don't worry. If you think it will work, let's use it. I'm not a C++
fundamentalist, and Java is a nice language - a bit slow perhaps. As
long as we stay away from the Sun distribution we might even get away
with it. :-)

How about doing some performance tests on GCJ? One test could be
measuring how fast you can move large chunks of data between Java
code and C code, comparing the results with a C-only equivalent. If
it works out ok, we can start coding in Java and then rewrite slow
sections in C or C++ as necessary.
We can for instance start implementing the "hardware abstraction
layer" that John's been working on in Java, and later have someone
(me) rewrite it in C++ when we need to optimize things.

Not sure I follow you ... but anyway, this project might be different
from others in that its geek-factor is fairly low and attracts a
crowd that is less inclined to sit day and night just to create
a "cool" piece of software. In other words: let's improvise and see
what happens.
