The forehead muscle are not a problem if you are relaxed. You will see some data that looks like eye blinks, but is not. After a while you will be able to see the difference. An eye blink will have a low frequency spectrumall the way down to DC, while the Delta information will have a peak at 1 or 2 Hz. You need a good FFT and waterfall display to see this.

The hospital testing was intended to show that "only" changing the "program" had definite measurable characteristics. The significance of respirationis that it measures the activity of the mind. Heart rate is an indicationof oxygen usage, and respiration rate is an indication of CO2 exhaust levels. When sitting still, the mind is the main user of oxygen. Mental activity uses glucose and oxygen as the fuel and CO2 and water are the waste products of metabolism. If you could "still" your mind and meditate, you willuse less oxygen and therefore expel less CO2. This will show up as a reduction of the required respiration rate. Please note that not many people can reduce their respiration rate to an average of 5 bpm (breaths per minute) and as low as 2 bpm. The TM data I have shows a reduction from 12 bpm to10 bpm during meditation. The opposite or Up program shows a huge jump in CO2 production and an marked increase of the respiration rate. This indicates a significant increase of mental activity.

Yes, I have not found any other "sound" technology that is as powerful as the Brain State Synchronizer. A fellow who spent 7 years living in ashrams in India bought my Synchronizer and told me it was more powerful than anything he experienced in India. A lady who worked for the Monroe Institute for 20 years bought my machine and uses it every day with great results. This may sound like self promotion, but I am quite proud of what I have developed. It has helped a lot of people and hopefully it will help a lot more. Every time I make this kind of statement I get "flamed" by Doug Southerland. I just wish he would try it, do the testing, and prove me wrong insteadof just discounting the technology.

That's exactly why I've been avoiding them, but from what you write it sounds
like that is where a lot of the 'interesting' activity is occurring with the
conscious mind. Yeah... that makes sense, especially in evolutionary terms.
Ok; I'll have to start doing some testing there and get some first-hand
experience on dealing with artifacts due to ocular movement, forehead muscles,
etc. Heck--it will be a lot easier to prep! :)
>Another much easier indication is finger tip temperature and skin resistance.
Yeah, I've been using both also to get an indication of arousal/relaxation
levels.

It depends what you are looking for. My fault for the sloppy use of the term
"meditation." Yes, when I sit in zazen, it is in Burmese position. (Half
lotus is doable, full lotus maybe in another lifetime... :)
But in order to explore the use of sound in the way I want to, it will require
lying down. Part of my training in college was in dream states and their
therapeutic use. I kept up this practice afterwards. Then, a few years ago,
my interest in this area took an unexpected turn. Plus, I did some work with
Jeffrey Thompson who has some pretty innovative ideas as to how to use sound in
order to balance the central nervous system, and I want to explore that.
Again--it means lying down, or at least reclining.
>Look at my web site. We did some testing in the hospital and measured respiration rate, etc with meditation.
I found some graphs under "Test Data" showing the respiration and skin
resistance--is this what you were referring to? I'm not sure I understand the
respiration graphs, although respiration certainly seemed to make a dramatic
increase when the "sports program" kicked in. Talk about a stationary workout.
:) And it also looks like the changes in respiration and skin resistancewere
more pronounced with the use of the Brain State Synchronizer as compared to
using a meditation tape or transcendental mediation--am I understanding the
implications correctly?
And thanks again concerning electrode placement--I think that I may have been
missing out on some very important data!
